ASV Berlin II put in a resilient performance against CSV Afrisko to continue their unbeaten start to the season
A hard-fought game ended up with a convincing 3-0 victory for the team from Moabit, though it could have been a different story. After suffering a torrid start to the season, CSV seemed to come out with a point to prove, pressing high and creating a number of good chances early on. A cross to the back post was just missed by the arriving winger, while von Wahl was forced to make a number of strong saves.
CSV also kept possession well in the first half, meaning the away team resorted primarily to playing long balls. However, this approach did pay off as the physical presence of Acosta allowed Volodin to break through, beat his man 1v1 for strength and smash home from distance for 0:1 before half time.
In the second half, the pattern remained mostly unchanged. CSV continued to press and probe, but came up against a determined defence. ASV II were mostly creating chances through set-pieces and direct balls to Volodin. The 2:0 came when substitute Kaplan positioned himself well to flick on a throw-in, which McKee read expertly to nip in front of his man and knock past the goalkeeper.
CSV didn't allow this set-back to beat them, and really should have got one back with 20 minutes to go. An excellent through-ball down the left found the CSV striker 1v1. After getting a little fortunate with his first shot, it appeared that all was left was to stroke into an empty net. However, the imperious Kliemann arrived with a long leg to deny a clear goalscoring opportunity and retain the clean sheet.
It was then up to the substitute Thompson, last season's joint top scorer for ASV, to put the icing on the cake. Phillips played a quick throw behind the unsuspecting centre-back for Thompson to collect and smash past the unwitting goalkeeper, sealing a remarkable away victory.
